Description
The STIHL MS 881 sits right at the top of the food chain. It’s STIHL’s most powerful series-produced chainsaw, built for professional forestry and sawmill environments where you’re dealing with large diameter timber, tough conditions, and workloads that would overwhelm smaller saws. With 121.6 cm³ displacement and 6.4 kW (8.7 hp) on tap, it’s designed to keep chain speed and cut progression strong even when the bar is buried deep in hardwood.
Despite the sheer size, STIHL has clearly focused on making it workable in the real world. The powerhead is listed at 9.7 kg (without guide bar and chain), and the saw is offered with 30″, 36″ and 41″ bar options, paired with a .404″ Rapid Super chain setup to suit heavy-duty cutting.
For long sessions, the MS 881 leans on features that reduce downtime and fatigue:
-
HD2 air filter + compensator help the saw maintain performance for longer between maintenance stops
-
Variable-displacement oil pump lets you run efficient oiling day-to-day, with the option to increase flow for long bars or dry timber
-
STIHL Ematic system is designed to get oil where it’s needed and can reduce consumption (STIHL states up to 50% in the right conditions)
-
Anti-vibration system helps make extended cutting more comfortable
-
Side-mounted chain tensioning keeps adjustments quick and protected, and captive nuts help avoid lost hardware in the field
There are also job-savers for harsh weather and heavy starting loads, including carburettor heating for winter running and manual decompression to reduce effort on start-up. Add in tool-free fuel and oil caps, and it’s a machine that’s been built to work hard, day after day, in the toughest environments.
